Jinhua Fm

Period:
Cretaceous

Age Interval:
Late Cretaceous, K2jh, (35)

Province:
Zhejiang

Type Locality and Naming

Western Zhejiang. The Jinhua Formation was erected by Zou Xinhu and Chen Qishi in 1964. The section for the designation is about 5 km away from Lanxi of Zhejiang. The reference section is in Gaoxiantang of Longyou, Zhejiang. Middle formation in the Qujiang Gr.

Lithology and Thickness

The Jinhua Formation is mainly represented by a set of microclastic rocks comprising light gray and purple red thick-bedded massive silty mudstone and clayey siltstone intercalated with thin-bedded siltstone and gray green, light gray and gray black mudstone. It is 263.4 m thick.

Lithology Pattern:
Claystone

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

Its base marked by gray purple red thick-bedded massive silty mudstone and fine sandstone is distinguished from the underlying Zhongdai Fm comprising gray purple moderately thick-bedded gravel-bearing lithic feldspar medium and coarse-grained sandstone and lithic feldspar fine sandstone. The formation lies conformably on the underlying strata.

Upper contact

Its top is bounded by the conformable appearance of light gray purple red moderately thick-bedded gravel-bearing lithic feldspar medium and coarse-grained conglomerate of the Quxian Fm.

Regional extent

The formation mainly occurs in the Jinqu basin of northwest Zhejiang. It varies to some extent both in lithology and thickness. In the northern part of the basin, it is represented by mudstone, silty mudstone occasionally with marl, dolomite and dolomitic mudstone, with a thickness of 469.7 m. It becomes thinner in the Longyou area. It ranges from 800 to 2125.5 m in thickness.
